The ABCs of Sport: 16 months to 3 years
This is often a child’s first time participating in a structured group lesson or sports class so everything is new and exciting (and sometimes overwhelming!). At this stage we focus on breaking down the basics, including proper execution of core physical skills while also building social skills in a supportive environment surrounded by caregivers and positive coach role models. Key skills we work on include:
- Learning to following instructions
- Independent play
- Turn taking
- Running in one direction
- Jumping while stationary with two feet
- Kicking while stationary
- Throwing while stationary
- Catching by trapping the ball against their chest
- Improving balance and coordination
- Building confidence
The FUNdamentals: 3 to 5 years
As your child increases their independence and progresses to our drop-off classes, they will work with our coaches to build more coordinated and complementary body movements while continuing to hone those critical social skills. At this stage we work with children to focus on…
- Cooperative play and making friends
- Increased focus during independent play
- Listening & following instructions
- Developing hand dominance
- Running in multiple directions, taking sharp turns while in motion, going backwards, accelerating and decelerating
- Jumping forward and starting to hop on one foot
- Kicking while running (in one motion), for distance, and at a target
- Throwing using their shoulders and elbows for accuracy, developing the ability to hit targets
- Catching bounced balls with two hands
In all of our drop-off classes we ask parents to remain outside for the duration of the class. Minimizing separation anxiety and distractions helps your kids focus squarely on the game.
Skills & Team Play: 6 to 8 years
Children at this level actively participate in cooperative and competitive play with a larger focus on developing optimal range of motion in combination with whole body strength development. These classes focus on:
- Enhancing decision making skills through team play
- Managing feeling around winning & losing
- Running with speed, agility, quickness and segmental speed in multiple directions
- Jumping with balance, coordination, distance, height and agility in multiple directions
- Kicking with distance and accuracy while the ball is in motion using different parts of the foot
- Throwing over long distances with increased accuracy
- Catching a ball with precision using both hands
- Bouncing a ball multiple times with control
Learning to Lead: 9-12 years
With this age group, we are all about refining, rehearsing and repeating sport skill combinations with improved coordination and sport-specific game play. In these classes we focus on:
- Understanding the fundamentals of game play and sport-specific rules
- Working together in teams to accomplish shared goals
- Introducing concepts of leadership and providing kids with the confidence they need to succeed in sport and life.
